More Information
Each 6.5 g sachet of Magnaspartate® contains 81% of the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for Magnesium in healthy adults.
Each Magnaspartate® sachet can be dissolved in 50-200 mL water and has a peach/apricot flavour. Solubility, however, is reduced at 50 mL or less1.
The osmolality of 1 sachet of Magnaspartate® in 200 mL of water is 168 mOsm/L.
Magnaspartate® is a Food for Special Medical Purposes (FSMP) and can be prescribed on FP-10, GP-10 and WP-10 forms.
Magnaspartate® has a shelf life of 2 years.
Hypomagnesaemia (magnesium deficiency) may occur in a range of conditions such as:-
- Intestinal failure and malabsorption disorders
- Short bowel syndrome
- Crohn’s disease
- Post organ transplantation
- Refeeding syndrome
- Post chemotherapy induced magnesium loss
- Post bone marrow transplantation
- Metabolic disorders
Magnaspartate Solubility
The Magnesium salt in Magnaspartate, Magnesium-L-aspartate.2H20, is 10 times more soluble than Magnesium glycerophosphate and 1000 times more soluble than Magnesium oxide2.
Organic salts of magnesium such as Magnesium-L-aspartate have the greatest water solubility and demonstrate a greater oral absorption and bioavailability compared to other less soluble magnesium preparations such as Magnesium oxide, Magnesium hydroxide, Magnesium carbonate and Magnesium sulphate3.
A study in patients with short bowel syndrome compared the effects of Magnesium plasma levels of patients receiving oral Magnesium-L-aspartate supplementation with those receiving a combination of intravenous Magnesium and oral Magnesium glycerophosphate. The study concluded that oral Magnesium-L-aspartate supplementation may be an effective way of treating hypomagnesaemia in patients with short bowel syndrome4.
