A normal vagina

The lining of a healthy vagina is lubricated in order to provide adequate 

protective daily moisture. 

Vaginal secretions, including those needed for lubrication during sexual 

arousal, arise predominantly from fluid that flows through the vaginal wall, with 

additional moisture from cervical mucus as well as cells shed by the lining of the 

vagina. Sexual stimulation increases the production of vaginal fluid as a result 

of increased blood flow.  This increase in fluid production during sexual arousal 

is important in order to avoid friction during intercourse.

Vaginal symptoms

Vaginal dryness is a common symptom of the menopause and unlike 

hot flushes, vaginal symptoms generally persist or worsen with aging.  

As oestrogen hormone levels continue to decline during menopause this 

causes the vaginal mucosa, lining of the vagina, to become very thin 

and fragile.  As a result of this thinning, the decrease in blood flow and 

reduction in cervical mucus production, the vaginal mucosa becomes 

very dry and easily damaged, and even minimal trauma, such as 

intercourse, can result in discomfort and bleeding.

Certain medical treatments can cause early menopause such as hysterectomies, 

chemotherapy or radiotherapy treatment for cancer.  

Vaginal dryness can cause itching, irritation and even pain during intercourse. 

Vaginal dryness can also be a side effect of certain oral contraceptives, antibiotics 

and anti-depressants, stress, breast feeding, child birth, endometriosis and fertility 

treatments.

Little wonder then that vaginal dryness can dramatically affect the zest for life of 

over 50% of women by age 50.

Vaginal dryness relief

lubricants and moisturizers.

In a randomized trial Replens, a polycarbophil-based vaginal moisturizer available 

over the counter, provided relief of vaginal symptoms that was equivalent to that of 

vaginal oestrogen and also lowered vaginal pH¹.
